Myth II : Soulblighter
is a top bollock game. In fact it's great. There's a interesting story running
through the single player game, but where this software really comes in to it's
own is when played on-line. It's TOTALLY GREAT STUFF.

Bungie.net is the online gaming system that has been developed by Bungie to allow players of Myth II to play against each other on-line. It includes many different game types, a comprehensive and sensible ranking system, and an 'Order' feature all in a comprehensive GUI and friendly environment (most of the time).
So far the service has proved very good, and extremly well thought out. Joining, setting up and arranging games is very easy. There have been one or two server problems, and very occasionally it takes many attempts to actually log on.
The game appears to run very well on low end systems. Myth II has been tested on a Pentium 233, 32Mb RAM, 4Mb graphics card and it works very well.
The test machine for connection for internet play was as follows:
Pentium II 300MHz
96Mb RAM
16Mb Diamond Viper V550 AGP
T1 internet link through a 10Mbps network card
It is therefore difficult to comment on how Myth II would play for UK gamers using a modem. With the test setup the speed was extremely good with lag ranging from none (mostly) to very occassional but not game crippling the rest of the time, even on the Ranked US servers with up to 16 players in a game. On a side note, the foreign (non-US) servers are almost always empty. Ping time range from ~<100 to ~>500, a the maximum ping time accetable before lag kicks in too much is ~375. Always go for the lowest possible ping time.
Hopefully Bungie have gone some way of getting round the problem of people playing the game using ripped off copies of the CD, as everyone who joins Bungie.net is required to register an account using a unique serial number supplied with the game. NOTE: As stated on the Bungie.net web page, for UK gamers the serial number is not on the inside of the CD case as stated, but instead on a piece of card inside the box.
All players on Bungie.net are given a ranking. This worked out using a range of factors (and voodoo magic so Bungie say!). To begin with a player is a lowly dagger, upon playing the next game they become a double dagger, then finally a treble dagger, after the third game the player actually starts on the ranking ladder.
The rankings after this point go up as follows:
- Single sword and dagger
- Crossed swords
- Crossed axe
- Shield
- Crossed swords on a shield
- Crossed axe on shield
- Small crown (prince?)
- Larger crown (king?)
- Jeweled crown (emperor?)
Points are awarded after each game, with higher points going to lower players who beat higher ranked players. Damaged received and inflicted is also a factor.
Every month Bungie resets three game scores on their servers. This is for the following reasons:
- To stop players topping the rankings because they only play game 'X' and are never beaten
- To encourage players to compete in all the different game types (and become good in them)
- To disuade cheaters
An Order is a bit like a team. Every player can belong to an Order if they wish. Joining an Order is either by invitation, i.e. you have proved a worthy opponent to a player from an Order and they wish to recruit you. By request, i.e. you ask a member of a particular Order if you may join. Or by setting up your own Order. This is done by registering with Bungie.net your order name and a few other snippets of info, you then need to have a minimum of two people join your order.
Belonging to an Order is of no particular importance to the network play of the game, although it can give you some comfort to know that friends are there to back you up in the lonely world of Myth II.
Orders are important in the respect that most Tournaments are aranged as Order Tournaments and also that there is a leader board on Bungie.net specifically for Orders.
In order of most played on Bungie.net: (This is only a rough guide)
1. Body Count
2. King of the Hill
3. Last man on the Hill
4. Steal the Bacon
5. Flag Rally
6. Capture the Flag
7. Territoties
8. Captures
9. Hunting
10. Stampede!
11. Assassin
12. Balls on Parade
13. Scavenger Hunt
Descriptions of each game can be found in the Myth II manual, however a very brief description is provided below, I would strongly suggest you study each game type in the manual. However, you may notice that games listed 1, 2 and 6 are not in the manual. I have provided a more in depth look at these below.
Body Count
It's closest counterpart is Deathmatch from the world of FPS's. A free for all blood bath!
Every man for himself (unless alliances and/or teams are on!). - I know I said I
would provide a more in depth look at non-listed game types but what else can I say!
King of the Hill
There are many units in Myth II multiplayer, and each game-type/map allows the player to select from different ones. Below is a very rough comparative table of units. This is my opinion so if you disagree plz let me know at [email protected]
